Next.js vs WordPress: which one should you choose in 2025

WordPress powers 43% of the internet. Next.js powers the companies growing fastest. Which one is right for your site?

It depends. But probably not in the way you think.

What is WordPress

WordPress started in 2003 as a blogging platform. Today it runs nearly half the web. It's accessible, endlessly customizable, and anyone can learn to use it in a few days.

That accessibility is also its ceiling. WordPress was built to be simple — not fast.

What is Next.js

Next.js is a React framework built by Vercel. It's not a CMS — it's a development environment for building fast, scalable, modern web applications. Notion, TikTok, Nike, and Twitch all run on it.

There's no visual admin panel. It requires a developer. But what it produces is in a completely different league.

Head to head

Speed Next.js wins, and it's not close. Sites built with Next.js load in milliseconds. WordPress sites, weighed down by plugins and heavy themes, often exceed 3-4 seconds — an eternity for Google and for your visitors.

SEO Next.js renders pages server-side, which means Google indexes them perfectly out of the box. WordPress can reach solid SEO results, but it requires additional plugins, constant optimization, and careful configuration.

Ease of use WordPress wins here. Anyone can update text, add pages, and manage content without touching code. Next.js always requires a technical person for structural changes.

Cost WordPress looks free but isn't — hosting, premium plugins, themes, maintenance all add up. Next.js deployed on Vercel has very low or zero hosting costs, but requires a developer to build.

Security WordPress is the number one target for web attacks worldwide. Precisely because it's so widespread, it's constantly under fire. Next.js, with no exposed database and no accessible admin panel, is structurally more secure.

Choose WordPress when:

  • You need to manage content independently every day
  • You have a limited budget and want to do everything yourself
  • Your site is primarily a blog or a simple e-commerce
  • You don't have access to a developer

Choose Next.js when:

  • You want a fast site that converts
  • SEO is a strategic priority
  • You have an agency or developer you work with
  • You're building something that needs to scale

Our take

At MosTag we build everything with Next.js. Not because it's trendy — because the results are objectively better. Speed, SEO, security, scalability.
